Seniors Match v Ipswich – Away – Friday 21 April

A warm welcome and near perfect conditions for the time of year awaited Felixstowe Seniors at Purdis Heath on this calm, if a little overcast, April day.  The controversial changes to the course were in much discussion, the re worked bunkers came into force as far as Felixstowe were concerned…!!  A good day on an excellent golf course and fine fare was had by all.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;

If putts had not lipped out when theirs always found the hole,
And bounces gone our way on the day,
If the traps had not just caught our ball on the dry firm ground
When theirs magically bounced over or around.
Then the result would have been very different my son.

Sometimes the end result does not reflect the performance, the 6 ½ – 1 ½  loss would appear to be a heavy defeat on paper, but golf is not played on paper and  with most matches being decided on the last two holes many could have gone either way .

So it’s fair to say that against a very good Purdis 16 the result could have been very different.  The talk in the changing rooms was of chip ins from nowhere, monster putts and the like.  Captain of the day, Mike Pineo, said that you get days like this, so Felixstowe, you can hold your heads high and go forward with pride.  The golfing gods were definitely not with us today gentlemen.

Mike denied the rumours that he was performing at the Edinburgh Festival later in the year
